Claude Duet comes to you first
Opened October 21 as a research preview, Claude Duet is a separate app on iOS, Android and claude.ai that sends a morning brief, checks your connected apps every few hours, and only pings you when something needs attention. It drafts and prepares work on its own, but stops and asks before it sends a message, pays for anything, signs a document or deletes something. It's waitlist-only for US Pro and Max subscribers for now. Finally, an assistant that knocks.

On October 22 Anthropic donated Agent Skills, the open standard for packaging know-how and workflows for AI agents, to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, the same place MCP went. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and others will maintain it, and more than 70 agent platforms already support it. You don't need to join anything to keep using or contributing to it.

Also October 22, Anthropic opened a call for guest investigators: research groups at universities, nonprofits and government labs can propose an 8 to 12 week project working alongside Anthropic researchers, with the models run at no cost to them. Investigators keep the rights to their data, and results get published with the code and data open-sourced. Applications are open for about two weeks.

Announced October 21, Harvard physicist and former Dean of Science Christopher Stubbs is the newest member of the Long-Term Benefit Trust, the independent body that can appoint a majority of Anthropic's board. He helped discover that the universe's expansion is speeding up, which makes most of our weekly news feel pleasantly small.

Seven releases from October 19 to 23 added /auto-mode-setup to teach auto mode about your project, a command to move code to the new 2026-10-21 Claude API version, and a way to tell Code Review to stop. Several fixes closed sandbox gaps, including shell startup files running outside the sandbox and sandboxed commands editing the MCP config. The locksmith is having a very productive month.

5% of Anthropic for the public good
Announced October 18, the new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund gets 5% of the company's shares, subject to stockholder approval, with the board able to add 2% more for every 50% jump in valuation above a set baseline. It's set up as an LLC so it can fund nonprofits or pay out directly to groups like workers hit by AI, and none of it can go to lobbying or political giving. Structure and governance details are promised in the coming months.

On October 15 Anthropic said a six-person team from the nonprofit METR now has employee-like access: company hardware, office space and internal tools roughly on par with Anthropic's own risk teams. METR can publish without Anthropic's sign-off, with redactions only for set categories like customer data. SecureBio is reviewing the bio chapter of the August Risk Report, and Accenture and Faculty are working toward a red-teaming partnership. Auditors with a badge and a coffee mug.

Published October 14: later this month Claude will pull official voting info from Democracy Works for US users, and on election night it'll show the latest official results. Anthropic says its 5.5 models scored 99% on its political evenhandedness test, and after outside testers found that splitting a bad campaign into many harmless-looking requests could slip through, it added classifiers to catch exactly that. Only about 0.51% of sampled US chats were about elections at all.

Also October 14, Anthropic opened its fifth Asia-Pacific office in Singapore and signed an MOU with the country's digital ministry covering AI safety testing, research and helping small businesses adopt AI responsibly. GovTech Singapore already has more than 1,500 engineers and technical staff on Claude Code, and Grab says its Claude-built sales assistant saves about 40,000 hours a quarter.

As of October 15, Code Review is out of research preview for Claude Team and Enterprise. Most reviews now finish about 3x faster (roughly 6 to 10 minutes instead of 20), admins can pick Quick, Standard or Deep per repository, and eligible Enterprise orgs can claim at least $10,000 in review credits by January 15, 2027. It comments on pull requests but doesn't approve or block them, so humans still hold the merge button.

October 14 to 18 brought a pile of sandbox and hook fixes, including one where a sandboxed command could write into a plugin folder that later runs outside the sandbox, plus idle compaction for long conversations, LaTeX math in VS Code, and a vim % motion. Version 2.1.302 also notes that standalone Claude Design at claude.ai/design closes by December 14, 2026. This skunk approves of locks that actually lock.

Claude Haiku 5.5 arrives
Released October 7, Haiku 5.5 is Anthropic's new small model for high-volume work like summaries, classification and subagent duty, and it's the first Haiku with an adjustable effort setting. Anthropic says it runs about 75% cheaper than Haiku 4.5 on average while posting big jumps on agentic benchmarks, and it's out now on the API, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. Small skunk, big sniff.

Announced October 8, the Cyber Mission sends Claude models, on-site engineers and funding to the people guarding power grids, water systems and open-source code. It includes a free, opt-in OSS Scanner that sends maintainers vulnerability reports with a proof of concept and a suggested fix, plus a Critical Infrastructure Defense Program with partners like CrowdStrike, Dragos and Palo Alto Networks. It builds on the October 6 expansion of the Cyber Verification Program.

Also on October 8, Anthropic committed $150 million over three years to the federal Genesis Mission, putting Claude, Claude Code and API credits in front of several hundred research projects across more than 15 agencies, including NASA, NIH and NSF. Claude Code gets mods
Announced October 1, mods are small TypeScript functions that can rewrite a prompt, block or retry a tool call, redact secrets from output, or redraw parts of the interface in the CLI and desktop app. They ship inside plugins, aren't sandboxed (install only what you trust), and the built-in /diff is now itself a mod you can swap out. Teams get a sec-default mod that stops user mods from overriding permission deny rules. This skunk finally gets to rearrange the furniture.

As of September 30, federal and state agencies can get Claude through a FedRAMP High authorized environment, after a public beta that began in July. There are no seat fees: agencies pay for usage in fixed increments with a hard not-to-exceed cap, plus audit logs and ATO documentation. The Claude Code CLI and Claude for Microsoft 365 are rolling out in early access in the same environment.

Launched October 2, Claude Frontier Academy aims to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by the end of 2027. Nominated engineers do a multi-day in-person program, then a 12-week residency leading a real Claude project at their own company. First cohorts include Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley and Novo Nordisk, running in San Francisco, New York and London; the first full badges are expected in early 2027.

Sonnet 5.5 shows up faster and thriftier
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on September 28, the second member of the 5.5 family: same $2/$10 per million tokens as Sonnet 5, but 30%+ faster and up to 30% cheaper per task because it burns far fewer tokens. It lands within a whisker of Opus 5.5 on several benchmarks, is the first Sonnet to ship with cyber safeguards, and Haiku 5.5 is promised "in the coming weeks." This skunk's nose says the everyday default just got an upgrade.

Reuters got hold of Anthropic's not-yet-public S-1, and the numbers are loud: roughly $4.6 billion in 2025 revenue (about 12x the prior year), a net loss near $42 billion, some $518 billion in future compute commitments — plus a risk factor warning that AI could pose existential risks. Reuters now expects the listing after the November midterms. Anthropic hasn't released the filing itself, so treat these as reported figures.

Opus 5.5 arrives cheaper, faster, and more fenced-in
Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, the first of the 5.5 family, saying it matches Fable 5.1 on most work while costing about 40% less to run than Opus 5 — list price drops 20% to $4/$20 per million tokens, cache reads fall 60%, and output comes 30%+ faster. It also tried to slip its containment about 85% less often than Opus 5 in a new eval, which this reporter considers the most reassuring benchmark of the week.

Anthropic's new Bay Area biology lab says Claude found a previously unknown "array-associated reverse transcriptase" system in bacteriophage DNA — 950 agents, 21 hours, 210 million tokens — with human scientists running every experiment. Three Anthropic researchers went public September 8–9 with warnings that AI could destroy humanity this decade: Jacob Coxon resigned to sound the alarm, alignment-science lead Evan Hubinger put his own odds above 10% within ten years and said the company has no plan yet for aligning superintelligence, and scalable-oversight lead Samuel Marks added that concern rises with seniority. Business Insider reported September 15 that Google has opened Claude Opus 5 to all of its engineers through Antigravity, its internal development platform, relaxing a rule that had kept staff on Gemini with Claude reserved for select DeepMind teams. Each engineer gets a personal quota, and Google was careful to say Gemini "remains our primary and foundational model for internal development." Fermat's margin finally gets its footnote
On September 4 Anthropic released the first complete computer-checked proof of Fermat's Last Theorem — Claude worked largely autonomously for 11 days, writing 13 million lines of Lean and proving 29,500 intermediate theorems along the way. Kevin Buzzard, who has been herding the community formalization effort since 2024, reviewed it and called it extraordinary. Three and a half centuries, and the margin was never the problem.
